Yang Liping is one of the most famous dancers in mainland China. Her work continues to combine and re-imagine the diversity of the country’s contemporary and ancient traditions. These dancers are all from Yunnan province, who used to be farmer in their village, and Yang brought them out from the village, trained them to be dancers. They’re completely raw, wild, like diamond in the rough, coming out from the earth. This photo captured the moment they were playing drum, some of the drums are 3 meters high, and carried from the border of China and Burma.
